Baptisms at Grace Church

At Grace Church we believe baptism is a holy moment in the life of the individual being baptized and our community of faith. We view baptism as a sacrament. In other words, we believe God uses the common element of water as a vessel of God's grace in the life of the person being baptized.

The water we use in baptism reminds us of many things. It is a symbol of new birth, indicating that we have been adopted into God's loving family. It is a symbol of cleansing, reminding us that we have a forgiving God who washes away all our sin. It is a symbol of nourishment, reminding us that God nourishes us with God's Holy Spirit all along life's journey. And, it is a symbol of our calling to be ambassadors of God's love and light, which has been revealed in Jesus Christ, to the world.

At Grace we baptize infants because God's grace is not something we earn, but something we experience. However, we work hard to teach our children the meaning of their baptism as they grow and mature. Then, when they are ready, we then offer them the opportunity to "affirm their baptism" through the act of confirmation as they publicly profess their faith in Jesus Christ and their desire to live a life that honors him.

Whether we are baptizing an infant, child, youth or adult at Grace Church, we take baptism seriously. That's because we believe God is doing something powerful in the life of that individual and our community of faith. God is claiming each of us as God's children and calling us to use our lives to be God's light and life in the world!
